Varsity Boys Basketball vs. FRISCH

Sting Lose Nail-Biter To Cougars; Now Look Ahead To Satran Tournament

December 22nd, 2013- In a major division rivalry game, SAR fell to Frisch 45-43 in overtime. The game was close throughout, as neither team was able to pull away at any point. Both teams displayed strong all around performances, but it was the Hod brothers whose clutch shooting from three enabled Frisch to be in control for most of the game. Hyman and Shenwick played very nicely overall. Tyler Hod hit the winner on a baseline floater with just two seconds left. Despite the tough loss, SAR has the luxury of being in the "improvement" stages, while other teams have hit their peaks already. Sitting at 6-2 in league play, the Sting come back from winter break and get right back into the swing of things in the 2014 Scott Satran Memorial Tournament. Look for SAR to make some serious noise out on the Island.

JV Girls Basketball vs. HAFTR

JV Girls Bounces Back

December 23, 2013- The JV Girls basketball team bounced back from a loss against Kushner with a strong 16 point win over the HAFTR Hawks. SAR was up 7-3 after the 1st quarter and had a 17-6 lead going into the locker room. Feeling confident that their pressure defense would be a continued success, The Lady Sting stuck with it in the second half and managed to hold HAFTR to 14 total points by the end of the 3rd.  In the end, SAR pulled out a win and beat the HAFTR Hawks 33-17.  Rebecca Kann led the Lady Sting with 16 points. The JV girls are now 4-1 and try to keep the winning streak alive on Sunday January 12 against the Frisch Cougars.

More details to come shortly

JV Boys Basketball vs. FLATBUSH

Sting Take Rubenstein Title

December 21st, 2013- In a rivalry game only itntesified by the Homecoming crowd and the stakes at hand, SAR defeated Flatbush 38-25. The Sting came out on fire, led by Ariel Smith and Kubersky, who kept opponents out of the paint for the most of the evening. The Sting took a nice lead into the half, but Flatbush's three point shooting kept them alive. Eventually in the third quarter, SAR was able to build a substantial lead and put the game out of reach. The sophomore experience exhibited by SAR clearly rubbed off on the freshman, particularly on tournament all star Daniel Wisotsky, who finished with 8 in breakthrough performances. Defense was the main story line for SAR, and Coach Courtney honed in on that in his post game remarks. "To hold a team to a mere 25 points is indicative of top-notch, swarming defense." The Tournament MVP was Kub, who finished with 9, while Smith and Wisotsky took home all star awards. Although SAR won Tier II, they still went 3-0 in tournament, and go back to regular season play having played a great tournament. This team is no fun to mess with. Go Sting!

Varsity Boys Basketball vs. FLATBUSH

Sting tame the Falcons

December 21, 2013- In front of a packed Homecoming crowd, Varsity Boys Basketball defeated Flatbush 44-24 to improve their regular season record to 6-1. The Sting started out the game on a dominatinf 11-2 run,  jumped out to an 11-6 lead after one quarter and a 20-9 lead at the half. The Sting's success was largely due in part to the team's inside game. In the second half, the Sting's three-pointers were still not falling (they had zero on the day), but the inside presence of center Sammy Marcus and relentless drives to the basket by starting guards Daniel Jonas and Sammy Hyman were enough to help the Sting go home with a comfortable victory. Hyman led the way for SAR with 17 points, Marcus finished with 9, and forward Zach Wohlberg had 7 on the evening. On his birthday, Shenwick led the charge on the defensive end of the court.
Nathan Haddad led the Falcons with 9 points, and Buddy Settzu and Meyer Mizrahi each had 4 in the loss.
SAR looks to exact revenge against Frisch, the team who handed them their only loss of the season, on December 23rd in the Hive.

Varsity Girls Basketball vs. FRISCH

Sting fall to Cougars

December 19th, 2013- Varsity Girls Basketball was defeated by Frisch last night 32-23.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, and were able to control the tempo throughout the first half, heading into the locker room with a 19-13 lead.
In the third quarter, the Lady Sting struggled offensively, and deficit grew to 27-17 at the end of the quarter. SAR started off the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run, but that's as close as they got in Frisch's nine-point win.
Rebecca Packer led the Lady Sting with six points, and Dahlia Fischer, Leah Shulman and Sara Waxman each had four in the loss.
Despite the loss, the team still sits at a respectable 5-2, and they remain a threat to go far in the playoffs.  They look to bounce back on January 5th against Hillel.

Varsity Boys Hockey vs. RAMAZ

Rams Are Too Much For Sting

December 19th, 2013- In a major rivalry game with playoff implications on mind, SAR lost to Ramaz 3-1. The game was very physical throughout, as numerous penalties were called against both of the teams. The lone SAR goal was scored by Ashy Safdeye. The Sting's scoring problems have been a persistent issue all year long, and last night's efforts were not indicative of any improvement on that front. The Sting now sit at 5-4-1 in the division with a must win game coming up this Sunday against TABC.

JV Boys Basketball vs. JEC

Freshman Stands out in Win over JEC

December 19th, 2013- SAR JV Boys Basketball defeated JEC, 53-43, in Game 2 of the Rubenstein Memorial Basketball Tournament, raising the Sting's record to 2-0 and elevating the team to Tier 2 championship game. SAR led throughout the game until JEC tied it in the 4th, 38-38.  But from that point on, SAR went on a 15-5 tear, including Ariel Smith's four free throws and six overall points in the fourth.  While Rafi Kubersky contributed 14, the major star of the evening was freshman Daniel Wisotsky, who scored 20, including four 3-pointers and 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

Girls Volleyball vs. BRURIAH

December 19th, 2013- SAR JV and Varsity girls volleyball swept Bruriah last night in a double header.

JV Boys Hockey vs. RAMAZ

Frelich to the Rescue

December 19th, 2013- In a game between two of the league's stronger teams, SAR took down Ramaz 3-0. The game was well played by both sides, and the fire of a rivalry game was certainly present. Jonah Halper broke the 0-0 tie with a goal off of a rebound in the middle of the first, but after that it was silient until the third. Freilich scored a top shelf "spinorama" in transition, a gorgeous goal, to give SAR a 2-0 lead. In desperation, Ramaz pulled the goalie and Lavi finished the job with a goal of his own. Coming off of a tough loss, SAR proved tough and resilient, key attributes for a team headed to the playoffs.

Varsity Boys Basketball vs. HILLEL

Sting Seal the Deal

December 18th- The SAR Sting defeated the Hillel Heat 45-35 in Deal, NJ. Coach Rafi Halpert described the win as "gritty". SAR clearly had the more talented team, but Hillel came out with fire and took a two point lead into the half. SAR finally woke up in the second half and began a huge run following a banked in buzzer beater three pointer to end the third quarter by none other than trick shot specialist Josh Deutsch, giving the Sting a one point lead. After that, clutch free throw shooting and strong post play from Shenwick and Marcus solidified the win. The Heat were led on all fronts by Junior standout guard Nathan Bibi, who is sure to be a household name by the season's end. The Sting improve their regular season record to 5-1, and face Flatbush in an out of division game in the Hive this Saturday night.

JV Boys Basketball vs. Hillel

December 18th, 2013- In one of the more spirited comebacks in SAR basketball history, the JV team won its first game of the Rubenstein Memorial Basketball Tournament, 51-50, against Hillel, in overtime. Down by 11 in the fourth, SAR went on a full court press defense and went on a tear.  Ariel Smith and Remy Neuhaus each scored 6 points in the fourth as SAR outscored Hillel 21-15 in the final quarter, forcing overtime.  Overall, Remy had 14, Ariel 12, and Rafi Kubersky 12.  Each member of Sting nation played exceptionally well on defense to allow for the comeback.  Michael Klein hit two clutch free throws with under a minute left in overtime to preserve the precarious lead. It was Smith though who keyed the run. He ran the offense with poise and efficiency, taking it to the basket when needed and dishing off to the big man for several easy layups. SAR next plays JEC in tournament play.

Sting Pick up Huge Win

December 16th, 2013- SAR picked up a much needed win over JEC, winning 5-0.  Goal scorers include Jacob Unger and Jesse Schanzer, who netted two. The Sting, having recently lost a 2-1 stunner to this team, dominated from start to finish, and never gave the Thunder a chance for victory. SAR, now 5-3-1 on the season, are in the midst of a major playoff push in a competitive Yeshiva League. Look for the Sting to make some noise come January.

Sting Fall in OT

December 11th, 2013- SAR lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Kushner, 2-1. The lone Sting goal was scored by Jared Isaac, who now leads the team in GPG. Many penalties were called against SAR, again proving to be the team's Achilles heal. Overall though, the team did play strong, but missed on multiple costly scoring chances.

Sting Fall in Battle of Unbeaten Teams

December 12th, 2013- In a battle between two undefeated teams, the Sting fell to Frisch 2-1. Frisch scored in each of the first two periods, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into the 3rd. In desperation mode, SAR pulled the goalie out to have a fifth man on, and actually managed to score a goal. However, it was far too late to pull out the win, and SAR lost its first game of the season. SAR got into the power play numerous times and just could not manage to score, as the Frisch goalie was a brick wall in net. The Sting did play a fairly solid game, but just could not find the back of the net. It's a tough way to lose, but SAR is still one of the premier teams on the scene.

Varsity Girls Volleyball vs. MA'AYANOT

SAR pulls out a fabulous win over the Top Ranked Rapids

December 9th, 2013- In a five set thriller, SAR came away with a huge win over the Ma'ayanot Rapids. The games were (27-25) (13-25) (25-21) (17-25) (21-15). In by far the Sting's best game of the season, the team showed signs of resiliency unseen until now. To Ma'ayanot's credit, the game was never out of their reach. But SAR was not going to lose this game. Not on Ruby Toledo's birthday. Both teams came out of the gate strong, but SAR pulled away a first set win in extra points. In the second set, The Rapids proved why they are one of the league's elite, putting together a dominating 12 point win. The life seemed to be sucked out of the Sting, but we were all proven wrong as SAR came back with a strong third game to bring themselves to within 1 game of a match win. The Rapids responded calmly and precisely, comprising a fourth game win, subsequently setting the stage for an epic last game. The Sting did not falter on the big stage. The game was tied at 10 a piece, and then the Sting began to pull away. SAR put together a magical run and took home a match victory. In a season marked by some inconsistency, this win showed the league that SAR is a legitimate threat. After the game, in an e-mail responce, Coach Gryzlo talked about the importance of the win. "Maayanot hasn't lost a game, we broke that (streak) tonight. It was truly an amazing game with amazing saves". Indeed, it was.

Wrestling vs. DRS

The Sting bounced back from their loss and dine on fish at DRS

December 8th, 2013- The SAR Sting Wrestlers faced off against DRS on Sunday in a much needed win against a yeshiva rival. SAR needed a pick me up after a disappointing loss to Kushner last week. SAR beat DRS handedly, 54-24, with strong performances by many of their wrestlers. Multiple wrestlers picked up their first wins of the season. Ori Fienberg picked up his first win at 103lb this year by pinning his opponent in the second period. Jeremy Berger, 120, got back on track from his second place finish last year at the Wittenberg tournament and pinned his first opponent of the season. Kevin Danishefsky also picked up his first win of the season. Max Slepian, Yakir Greenberg, and Kenny Burnstien all picked up their first wins of their careers and are looking to add a strong presence to the lineup at the upper weights. To cap off the performance Alexander Haberman set a school record pinning his Heavy Weight opponent in a whopping nine seconds(!!!!) SAR looked strong but they have a tough match at home against top ranked TABC  on the 17th.

Cooper Championship: Maimonides vs. SAR

December 7th, 2013- In a match up of undefeated teams, the Maimonides M-Cats took home the Cooper championship by defeating the SAR Lady Sting 50-36. To put it in Ethan Schorr's words, the Boston-New York rivalry was in full effect. The gym was packed as the home team drew out not only the school community, but the Riverdale community at large. After exciting pregame intros and a beautiful rendition of Hatikvah and The Star Spangled Banner by Yona Feit, it was time for some championship basketball. The game started out close, as the M-Cats took a 21-19 lead into the locker room. To start the third, Maimonides put together a quick 8-2 run giving the team an eight point lead that would not be relinquished. It remained an eight point game at the end of the third quarter. Maimo star forward and arguably the tournament MVP, Michal Alge, took the game over. Her 23 points were nothing short of instrumental in her teams' eventual win. Her quick feet and great balance enabled her to pick up a couple of and one opportunities as well as collect countless rebounds. The MCats pulled away and took home a 14 point win. The Lady Sting played hard, but it was unfortunately to no avail. Congratulations to this year's champion, the Maimonides MCats!

Overall, we were able to see a wonderful tournament, and SSU is proud to have been there every step of the way. Till next year!

Cooper Quarterfinals: Beren vs. Hyman Brand

In one of the tournament's hotly anticipated games, Beren took down Hyman Brand. This game was one of the closer games in the tournament. Beren had a 29-25 lead going into the half, behind an awesome scoring output from Elishiva Teigman, who poured in 17 first half points. Both teams played a strong second half, but it was Beren who prevailed and moved in to the semis.

Cooper Semifinals: Beren vs. Maimonides

The Miamonidies MCats defeated the Beren Stars 47- 30 to advance to tomorrow night's championship game against the host school, SAR High School. Maimonidies came firing from all cylinders, and took over quickly, grabbing a 17 to 4 first quarter lead. Through great defense, Miamonidies consistantly stole the ball and pushed it down the court, scoring most of their points on fast break layups. The Maimo defense was simply too much for Coach Cole's team to bear, as they handly picked up the win. The MCats will now face SAR in a matchup between the only two undefeated teams left in tournament play.

Cooper Quarterfinals: Weinbaum vs. Melvin J. Berman

Day 2 of the Cooper Memorial Tournament started off just as exciting as the first day. Weinbaum took down Maryland 46-18. Weinbaum was led by strong play from Remi Feintuck who scored 15 points and Meital Citron who scored 9 points. They helped take a demanding 24-6 halftime lead. Weinbaum kept it's foot on the gas as they did not look back, cruising to victory. Maryland did their best In the second half to stay in the game, but due to strong team defense by Weinbaum, Maryland was unable to overcome the deficit.

Cooper Semifinals: SAR vs. Weinbaum

December 6th, 2013- In front of the entire SAR High School student body, the Girls Varsity Basketball team defeated Weinbaum 35-34 in the semifinals of the Cooper Tournament.
SAR was able to jump out to a 10-3 lead after the first quarter thanks to the Lady Sting's suffocating defense. Weinbaum did a better job of getting shots off in the second quarter, particularly in the paint, which led to 10 free throws. However, the Storm were only able to hit one of those free throws, and went into the half down 17-7.
It appeared as if the home team was going to run away with the game, but Weinbaum soon unleashed their full-court press, and they were able to pull the game within three as the third quarter winded down. It appeared as if it would be a one-possession game at the end of three quarters, but in the final minute of the quarter, SAR senior Ali Trachtenberg hit a huge three-pointer to put the team ahead by six.
In the fourth quarter, Weinbaum had another run in them, using their press to tie the game at 27. However, the tie was short-lived, as sophomore superstar Dahlia Fischer, who had not taken many shots in the first three quarters, drove in and put up a beautiful shot to help SAR regain the lead. The Storm, led by junior Laura Betesh, kept it close throughout the quarter, but were unable to regain the lead from the Sting, falling by a single point.
Fischer led the Lady Sting in scoring for the second straight game, this time scoring 10 points to go along with numerous assists and a strong defensive effort. Junior Rebecca Packer and Trachtenberg also played well, scoring nine and seven points, respectively.
Betesh led the Storm with 16 points, and sophomore Maital Citron scored eight in the loss.

SAR will now play Maimonides in the championship game tomorrow night at 9:00 PM.

December 4th, 2013- SAR lost their second match of the season to Kushner, their first loss in Yeshiva League play, 64-48. It was a tough loss for an SAR team that had higher expectations for themselves. The wrestlers now have a chip on their shoulder, giving themselves a little motivation to com back stronger in their next match against DRS. Jonathan Weiner, Ben Listman and Zack smart all showed bright spots in a lack luster performance by the team, each pinning their opponents. Cooper Game 6 SAR vs. Beren

The SAR Lady Sting took down the Beren Stars by a final score of 39-27. Beren, coming right off of a huge win against Melvin J Berman, were looking for their recent success to carry over into the game against the already 1-0 Lady Sting. The game started off fairly close. By the first quarter's end, the score was only 8-4 in favor of SAR. Slowly though, the lead grew, and the halftime score was 20-12. The Sting pulled away in the second half, and ultimately went on to get the W. Beren was led in scoring by Elishiva Teigman with a game high 16 points. The Lady Sting were led by Sophomore Sensation Dahlia Fischer with 14 points, Rebecca Packer with 8, and Samantha Hollenberg put in 6.

Cooper Game 4 Maimonides vs. Hyman Brand

December 5th, 2013- The Maimonides MCats took down the Hyman Brand Lady Rams by a final score 61-33. By this point in tournament play, Maimonides has made themselves the team to beat as they lead the tournament in points scored, as well as wins (2-0, along with SAR in Division B who is also 2-0). Maimonides started off strong and did not look back as they took a 37-16 lead into the half. They continued their strong play offensively and defensively in the second half. Hyman Brand did their best to stay in the game, putting together a strong second half run but could not overcome the 21 point halftime deficit. The MCats played a strong all around game, and were led by Senior Michal Alge in scoring with a game high 23 points.

Cooper Game 5 Beren vs. Melvin J Berman

December 5th, 2013- In one of the wilder finishes The Hive has ever played host to, including games with its own teams, The Beren Stars defeated the Maryland Lady Rams by a score of of 46-45. The first half featured pretty balanced play from both sides. The second half however was one for the ages. Maryland came out firing from the get go, and held what seemed to be a commanding 12 point lead with 1:30 left in the third. In the fourth however, things changed. Coach Cole had his Stars play a vicious press against their opponent, helping them chip at what once looked like an insurmountable deficit. Beren however still found themselves down by 2 points with a minute and forty five seconds left when suddenly, Beren scored a lay-up and was fouled. They hit the free throw, and went on to win the game. The story line however for Melvin J Berman was its abysmal free throw shooting down the stretch, as well as a short lineup, giving them only 3 players who weren't fouled out, from a total of 6, that could finish the game! In other words, the end of the game was played with a 5-3 person advantage. Still though it proved to be an exciting game.

Cooper Game 3: Maimonides vs. Weinbaum

December 5th, 2013- In the third game of this year's David Cooper Memorial Tournament, the Maimonides M-Cats defeated the Weinbaum Storm 39-26. Meital Cirron scored nine points for Weinbaum, who sit at 1-1 heading into the second day of the tournament.

Cooper Game 2 SAR vs. Melvin J Berman

December 5, 2013- The SAR Lady Sting began their Cooper 2013 campaign with a 13 point win over Melvin J Berman, 43-30. The Lady Sting seemed to be in control of the game from the its opening tip. SAR ended the first quarter of play up 12-8 in front of a jam packed SAR Academy crowd. For many of the girls on the team it was somewhat of a homecoming event, but nonetheless, they had to deal wit the task at hand. SAR went in to the half up 19-12. Although the game was close to begin the second half, SAR quickly pulled away and won by a final of 43-30. Sara Waxman and Dahlia Fischer worked a lethal back court, clearly flustering the potent Melvin J Berman defensive scheme. SAR was led in scoring by Sara Waxman with 12 points and Sofie Levinson with 10 points. The Lady Sting played well, and look to carry their momentum in to the afternoon matinee against Beren.

The Storm were led in scoring by Betesh with a game high 20, Clements with 9, and Feintuch with 5. Hyman Brand was led in scoring by Davis and Kahn with 6 a piece.
