Varsity Girls Softball vs. Central- CHAMPIONSHIP

Girls Softball Continues its Strong Play; Rolls to Second Straight Championship
June 15th, 2014- Varsity Girls Softball defeated top-seeded Central 10-3 to win their second straight league championship.
The Sting came into the game on a hot streak, winning their past five games by a combined score of 85-5. However, this game was different. Central scored two runs in the first inning, forcing SAR to play from behind for the first time in months. SAR scored one run in the third inning to cut it to 2-1, but Central answered back in the next inning with a home run to extend the lead to 3-1.
With three innings to go and the team down two runs, SAR needed to play a nearly perfect final three innings if they wanted to win. That's precisely what happened.
In the fifth inning, clutch hits by freshman Rebecca Hyman as well as seniors Rachel Weintraub and Samantha Hollenberg gave SAR a 6-3 lead they would never relinquish. Sophomore Jessica Hecht added two RBI's in the sixth to make it 8-3, while Weintraub and sophomore Aviva Lidagoster each added RBI's in the final frame to extend the lead to 10-3.
In addition, the Sting once again received an outstanding pitching performance from junior Yona Feit. After a rough first inning, Feit dominated the potent Central bats and continued her superb playoffs (five runs given up in three games).
This was a great team effort, with everybody chipping in to make this win possible. Congratulations to coach Valerie Gryzlo and all of the players on a terrific season.

JV Boys Softball vs. Frisch- CHAMPIONSHIP

JV Boys Softball Wins Second Championship in Three Years
By Michael Courtney
June 15th, 2014- On a glorious spring day, the SAR JV Boys Softball Team faced Frisch for the league championship.  As the 7-seed, the Sting had already beaten DRS and JEC and now faced the incredibly talented 1-seed.  As the road team, SAR had the opportunity to bat first and in the first inning opened up a 6-0 lead.  Behind patient plate appearances and clutch hits, at one point six batters in a row reached base.  Frisch came storming back with 3 runs in the bottom of the first to make the game close again.  But in the third, the bottom of the order led a rally and SAR earned back those three runs to make the lead 9-3.  Eli Best had 3 RBI's to lead the charge and Jake Mannis, the starting pitcher, went 3 for 4.  Frisch chipped away at the lead with a run in the 6th and two runs in the 7th but alas, SAR held on.  The Sting played incredibly well on the field and co-captains Ariel Smith and Remy Neuhaus, batting third and fourth, combined for five times reaching base, two RBI's, and perfect outfield play.  The win gives SAR JV Softball its second league championship win in four overall title games.  Go Sting!!!

Varsity Boys Volleyball vs. North Shore- CHAMPIONSHIP

Sting Beat North Shore Handily; Complete the Three-Peat
By Sammy Marcus
June 8th, 2014- The Varsity Boys Volleyball team won the league championship by a score of 25-11, 25-16 over the top seeded NSHA Stars. Going in, NSHA had suffered only one defeat, a three-set loss at the hands of the Sting. In the match however, SAR was in total command from start to finish. The Sting came out very strong on defense with timely blocking from seniors Daniel Jonas and Sammy Marcus. Coupled with that, the Sting attack was also strong at the game's outset. SAR built up a substantial lead and never let up. The team played what proved to be arguably its best set of the season. The second set was much closer, but SAR broke away with the score even at 14 and brought home its third consecutive championship. Senior Eyal Foni, by far the team's most essential ingredient, proved once again that he's amongst the league's best by playing a flawless game at setter.  With the "three-peat", this team has proved that it is one of the strongest in school history. Congratulations to everyone on the team, and especially to the seniors who were on all three teams.

By Michael Courtney
June 8th, 2014- SAR JV Boys Softball beat JEC 9-4 in the semi-final to advance to the championship game (date and time TBD) where the Sting will face the host Frisch Cougars.  Avenging an earlier 7-6 regular season loss to JEC,  SAR came out swinging with 4 runs in the top of the first.  They never relinquished the lead from there.  Ariel Smith went 4 for 4, including a Home Run, two Doubles, and 5 RBI's.  Jake Mannis pitched a masterful game and at the top of the order, Ben Winter and Eitan Hain each reached base three times with two singles and a walk apiece.  The JV team will be going to the title game for a third straight year and after winning it all two years ago, it hopes to capture the championship this season following last year's controversial one-run loss at Hillel.
