Varsity Boys Hockey vs. MTA

October 30, 2013- In a highly anticipated game for this particular rivalry, SAR fell to MTA by a final score of 4-1. The final score is not well indicative of the Sting's overall play, for the score was only 2-1 heading into the final period. The Sting power play defense was very strong, especially down the stretch. However, after the penalty kill, the Sting let up a heart breaking goal to MTA, and shortly after, pulled out the goalie and gave up the dagger. The lone SAR goal was scored by Junior Sam Schwalbe. The effort is certainly there in all of the team's games, and ultimately, the goals will come. There is no doubt this team will be a force to be reckoned with come February.

JV Boys Basketball vs DRS

October 30, 2013- In a 5-quarter exhibition game, DRS defeated the SAR JV Boys Basketball team 52-44.  SAR was led in scoring by Eli Friedman's 9 points on three 3-pointers, Remy Nehaus' 8 points, and Ariel Smith's 7.  The Sting had to play catch up from the start, falling behind early to a strong DRS lineup. After staring at a deficit, Coach Courtney called on his team to unleash some full court pressure on the Wildcats. The press was quite effective in stopping the initial bleeding and allowed the Sting to regain some composure. As for the half court defense, SAR's zone offered a new look to thwart the presence of DRS' 6"4 starting center and power forward. Overall, the team's preseason campaign was a success. The Sting look to begin the regular season with a bang as they take WHHS tomorrow night on the road at 7:15. Look ahead at Varsity Wrestling

October 29, 2013- The SAR Sting Varsity wrestling team will be competing in the South Plainfield Fall Wrestling Classic for the second consecutive year. Last year, the team, led by Coach Ron Simchi, did not bring home any gold medal finishes. However, fresh off of a second place finish in Yeshiva University's Whittenberg Wrestling Tournament, and with a crop of highly talented seniors at its disposal, SAR looks to rebound big time this year. The new program, only in its third year as a varsity sport, has taken great strides, and is now one of the school's finest. With committed wrestlers from every grade, the team is bound to be successful for years to come. Seniors Josh Shaw and Kevin "KD" Danishevsky, leaders of the team since the program's genesis, are ready to bring home a banner this year for the Sting. All eyes will especially be on the team when the boys take the mat at this year's Whittenberg Tournament.  Follow their progress at the only place for SAR Sting News, the Sting Sports Update.

JV Girls Volleyball vs. SKA

October 27, 2013- SAR JV Girls Volleyball was victorious in its first game of the season against SKA, winning in straight sets, 21-14 and 21-18. In the first game, first server Jennifer Goldsmith scored seven total serving points for SAR, while Eva Spier served seven straight serving points for SAR, including three aces! Coming off of the bench, Yael Weitzner played her position very well, getting SAR back to serve and helping her squad maintain control of the match. In the second set, what proved to be the final one, Eva Spier served five straight points for SAR including two aces, and Alana Woloshin served three straight points. The set however was highlighted by tremendous saves in the back row by Amanda Klestzick and Eva Spier, giving SAR control of serve and eventually the win. Coach Gryzlo remarked on the win, "it was great team work". The Sting look to continue their early success as the season progresses. Varsity Boys Basketball vs. FRISCH

October 26, 2013- Varsity Boys Basketball fell just short to its rival Frisch by a final score of 58-51. The first half was played quite evenly between the two senior heavy teams. SAR took its first lead of the game with about three minutes left in the halg, grabbing 16-14 lead. However, SAR lost momentum and gave up an 8-0 run, making the score 22-16 going to the locker rooms. The momentum continued early in the second half for Frisch, as the lead grew to a commanding 19 point lead. The fire never seemed to completely burn out though for the Sting. A ferocious run of their own cut the lead all the way down to five points with 22 seconds left in the ball game. Sadly though, it was too little too late. Two free throws by The Cougars iced the game, and The Sting went down. There were some positives to take away from the game though, as SAR really never gave up and fought valiantly until the final whistle. Also, The Sting shot tremendously well from the charity stripe. Sammy Hyman led the Sting in scoring with 17 points, Marcus had 13, and Wohlberg chipped in 11.The Sting look to take the positives from this game as positive momentum heading into the rest of the season.

JV Boys Basketball vs JEC

In a five quarter exhibition match-up at JEC, SAR won 61-52.  Behind Ariel Smith's all-around superb 20 points and stifling defense and Rafi Kubersky's fancy footwork and 14 points, SAR's starters were especially dominant.  Dovie Marcus scored 8 off the bench, including two huge 3-pointers in the 4th.  JEC treated the 4th like a real 4 quarter and SAR prevailed 50-48 through 4.  The night belonged to Smith as he scored 11 in the first and would have extended his 20 point outburst were it not for an exhibition game leading to many substitutions.  Asaf Gadasi chipped in 6 off the bench as well

JV Girls Basketball vs. CENTRAL

In their first and only exhibition game against Central, the SAR Girls JV team had to shake off some first game jitters but still managed to take a 12-7 lead into the half. After halftime SAR picked up the intensity on the defensive end, forcing turnovers and converting them into baskets, out-scoring Central 14-2 in the quarter. SAR continued their defensive dominance in the fourth quarter holding Central again to only 2 points as they went on to win 30-11. This was an all around team effort by SAR led by Rebecca Kann with 9 points and Helena Dweck with 6 points.

Varsity Boys Basketball vs. JEC

In a battle between two teams that equally wanted to win, the SAR Sting defeated the JEC Thunder 50-23.  Right from the opening tip, the Sting took control of the game.  Sting center Sammy Marcus made his presence known in the paint during the first quarter, and tight defense from the Sting enabled them to take a commanding 15 point lead at the end of one.  In the second quarter things slowed down, but the Sting continued to be in control going into the half with the a big lead.  In the third quarter, anchored by Josh Shenwick, the Sting continued to play pressure defense, but experienced a bit more difficulty dissecting the Thunder’s zone defense than it did it the first half.  Still, the Sting held a commanding lead going into the final frame.  In that final quarter, the Sting was led by Jeremy Sheinman off the bench, who ran the floor extremely well and ended up scoring 6 points.  It was an all-around team effort from the Sting, with each player seeing some action. Marcus scored 10 and Frenkel netted 8 to lead the team on the offensive end.  The Sting prepares for its next game against the Frisch Cougars on Saturday night October 26.

Varsity Boys Hockey vs. NORTH SHORE

Looking for some redemption following a tough loss in the regular season opener, SAR Varsity Boys Hockey took home a "W", defeating North Shore Hebrew Academy by a final score of 2-1. The game, played in Long Island on North Shore's sprawling campus, was by all accounts a must win affair. SAR wasted no time getting in a groove, as Senior Captain Jared Isaac ripped a slap shot passed NSHA's goalie to give his team a 1-0 lead in the first period. It's reported that the goal came from nearly half court, but nonetheless, a goal is a goal. The score remained the same until a lapse on the defensive end in the second period led to a NSHA goal, evening the score at 1. The team still managed to regain its composure and take the tie into the third period. Would a team, in dire need of a win, let this one slip? It looked so half way through the third, as neither team could put the ball in net. Then suddenly, with five to go, Junior Jack Schwalbe hustled to the net and worked some trickery, alluding the goalie and putting a marvelous wrap-around shot by him. The Sting took a 2-1 lead, and never relinquished it. Gilad Fortgang was very strong in net, and Zach Green was a valuable contributor to the win. The Sting look to ride on this momentum when they play MTA on October 30th.

Junior Varsity Boys Hockey vs. MTA

October 20, 2013- In a brutal display of dominance, SAR Junior Varsity Boys Hockey defeated MTA in The Hive by a final score of 13-0. Fresh off of crushing semifinal loss to DRS to end last season, SAR was primed to begin the season with a bang. Remarkably, the game was close after the first period, with The Sting only leading by a score of 1-0. Although the game was close to start, according to Assistant Coach Zack Fein, SAR "stayed with the game plan to pull away in the second period". They sure pulled away. The Sting were led by Freilich with 4 goals, and Yosef Garbow who netted two. The Sting look to resume this domincance when they take on JEC next Thursday

Varsity Girls Basketball vs. HESCHEL

"Varsity Girls basketball wins handily at Heschel".SAR jumped out to an 8 point lead after the first of five periods, and never looked backed, scoring effortlessly all night.
The Lady Sting were led by sophomore Dahlia Fischer, who filled up the stat sheet thanks to numerous fast-break layups, assists, blocks and steals. They also received strong efforts from seniors Samantha Hollenberg, Sofie Levinson, Sara Waxman and Ali Trachtenberg, all of whom contributed  timely baskets all night.
They open their regular season on October 31st @HAFTR."

Varsity Boys Hockey vs. JEC

October 17, 2013- SAR Varsity boys hockey opened up its regular season with a tough 2-1 loss at JEC. The Sting had numerous scoring chances, but failed to capitalize. JEC's goalie by all accounts played an almost unblemished game. Almost. Senior Captain Zachary Okun ripped a shot for his first goal of the season. This however was the Sting's only real highlight. The Sting played very flat, and went home with a defeat. It's early though, and the Sting look to pick up their first win and commence with its campaign. On a lighter note though, Sting Report would like to send out a Mazal Tov on behalf of all of Sting Nation to Coach Howie and Rachel Falkenstein on the birth of a baby boy! May he one day grow to be a Sting Great!

Junior Varsity Boys Basketball vs. RAMBAM

On Sunday the JV Boys Basketball Team faced Rambam Yeshiva in a road exhibition game. SAR won 52-25 in the five quarter game. They played terrific defense, and forced many turnovers leading to easy fast breaks. SAR was led in scoring by Ariel Smith's 10, Daniel Wisotky's 10, Rafi Kubersky's 8, Dovie Marcus' 7, and Michael Klein's 6. The outcome was never really in question but SAR pressed the gas pedal in the fourth quarter outscoring Rambam 15-4, and blew the game wide open to a 44-17 lead. The big men for SAR racked in tons of rebounds and drew fouls to send themselves to the free throw line. Collectively, SAR shot 8-12 from the stripe. Outside shooting was solid as well, as The Sting burried 4 three pointers. The freshmen served as a nice spark, with two of them being the leading scorers, while the third freshmen Yair Slasky provided the quick hands and crafty plays that guided SAR's early fourth quarter success. Overall a great showing by a team with high expectations, and a great team effort.

Junior Varsity Boys Basketball vs. TABC

October 19, 2013- The SAR JV Boys basketball team began it's 2013-14 preseason campaign at its rival across bridge, TABC. Simply put, the first two quarters to start the game were a grind. SAR's defense looked strong to start, but found it tough to score on the offensive end. The shots were open, as the Sting penetrated TABC's defense in a rather consistent basis. They just seemed to rattle out rather often. Then, in the third quarter. the "O" came alive. Charlie Thou went on a torrid, a personal 8-0 run to kickstart what looked to be a lack luster offense. And then the defense. SAR's zone 1-3-1 press led to multiple TABC turnovers. The tide had officially turned. Following SAR's lead came a hard fought back and forth type style of basketball, with SAR heading to the fourth leading by 5. For as strong as the Sting came out in the third. The opposite seemed to plague SAR at the start of the fourth, and they saw it's lead diminish. Yehoshua Naor, TABC's big man was dominant all night long on the glass and in the paint. SAR managed to weather The Storm and head into the fifth quarter down by just 6. Both teams in the fifth displayed strong ball movement and key buckets whenever the team needed them. SAR's energy seemed to die down toward the end of the game, and Coach Courtney call a timeout with 2:21 left, trailing by 7. It didn't seem to help much, as Sting's chances of winning slimmed by the second. The last minute was quite interesting though. SAR was on a mission, pulling the game to within 4 points with 33.4 seconds to go. But the rally came too late. As SAR eventually lost by a score of 60-55.

Varsity Boys Basketball vs. FLATBUSH MDY TOURNAMENT

October 16, 2013- After falling behind early, the SAR Sting managed to fight its way back to a 50-43 win over the Yeshiva of Flatbush Falcons.  The Sting was led on offense by point guard Sammy Hyman, who finished with a team high 18 points. His relentless play rubbed off onto the entire team.  The two teams traded baskets throughout the entire first half, but the real story of the first half was the Sting’s lackadaisical effort rebounding the basketball, and at the half the Falcons led by three, 24-21.  In the second half, the Sting played with more intensity and rebounded the ball much better than it did in the first half.  In the third quarter, the Sting went on a bit of a run, ignited by the three point shooting of guard Josh Deutsch off the bench, who finished with 8 points. During the final two minutes of that quarter, however, the Falcons began to come back, and going into the fourth quarter the Sting held a slim 3 point lead.  During the final quarter, the Sting played as one unit, with no player truly taking the spotlight, but played undisciplined at times.  Yet, in the last few minutes, the Sting’s team play was too much for the Falcons, and the Sting came away with the W. Josh Shenwick's play was superb, as his stellar defense put the clamps on the Falcons’ top player holding him to 8 points.  The Sting will move on to face the Heschel Heat in what promises to be a defensive duel. The game is Thursday, 10/17 in Magen David at 8:45pm.

Varsity Boys Basketball vs. KUSHNER MDY TOURNAMENT

October 14, 2012- The SAR Sting, just coming off of a victory in exhibition play vs TABC, looked to continue their success at the expense of the Kushner Cobras in the first round of the Magen David Yeshivah Tournament in Brooklyn, NY. The Sting came out of the gate sloppy, trailing by three going into the second quarter. Defense played a clear role in the second quarter though, as SAR’s tight man to man pressure forced Kushner into multiple turnovers and missed shots. In addition, shots began to fall for The Sting, particularly those that left the hands of Daniel Jonas from three point territory. The Sting held onto a slim lead going into the half, but the momentum was shifting strongly in their direction. The third quarter seemed to bring some of the same results seen after the second. SAR went on a scoring outburst toward the end of the third. The sequence of the game occurred during the final seconds of the third quarter. A strong defensive possession by SAR forced Kushner into a tough shot, which rimmed out to Josh Deutsch, who with three seconds on the clock, dribbled around three defenders before heaving a half court prayer. Bang! The ball went through the rim, and SAR, who got off to a rather shaky start, seemed to be in full control. Kushner however wouldn’t go down without a fight. A full court press kept SAR on its feet and led to a few turnovers and rushed possessions. However once The Sting managed to beat the press, it resulted in numerous buckets. SAR left victorious, winning by a score of 43 to 35. Balanced scoring all around for The Sting certainly was noticeable.. The Sting will look to move on to the next round of the tourney, as they will be facing Flatbush this Wednesday at 7:15pm in MDY.
