SAR Soccer: March Recap

All Four SAR Soccer Teams Start Off Strong

Earlier this month, SAR's four soccer teams began their seasons, and all have looked strong in the early stages of regular season play.

Varsity Boys Soccer is off to a 4-0 start, with blowout wins against Ezra, Ramaz, MTA and Flatbush. The Sting have been led by senior captain Isaac Blinder (14 goals on the season), but it has been far from a one-man show. As fellow senior captain Joshua Deutsch describes it, "The reason we've had so much success so far is definitely because of our chemistry. This is practically the same team as last year, except that everyone has improved their game." The senior core of this team won the championship as sophomores and lost in the finals last year. Another deep playoff run should be in store this year.

JV Boys Soccer started their season at 3-1, defeating Kushner, North Shore and Frisch, and losing to TABC. All four of those games have been on the road, which means the Sting have the advantage of playing their final four games in their home rink. Expect the Sting to end off the season strong and carry momentum into the playoffs.

Varsity Girls Soccer currently holds a 2-1 record. After dropping their first game of the season to Kushner, they responded with two blowout wins against Ilan. With Sofia Schreiber, the star of last year's JV Girls Championship team, leading the way, the Sting will look to continue their winning ways in the more difficult portion of their schedule.

JV Girls Soccer currently sits at 3-0-1. Like the Varsity Boys team, they have a slew of early season blowouts, including an 8-1 win against Frisch in their most recent game. With strong offensive play from sophomore Lauren Kann, strong defensive play from sophomores Yael Marans and Shoshana Goldman and strong goaltending from sophomore Adina Noble, this team is in great position to win its second straight championship.

We wish all four teams the best of luck going forward. Go Sting!

JV Girls Basketball vs. Ma'ayanot- CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

JV Girls Basketball Captures SAR's First Championship of the Year

March 12th, 2014- Last Wednesday night, JV Girls Basketball traveled to TABC to take on Ma'ayanot in the Yeshiva League championship game.
The two teams were engaged in a defensive battle at the start, and at the end of the first quarter, SAR held onto a slim 8-6 lead. In the second quarter, the Lady Sting showed why they were playing for a championship. A combination of timely shots, clutch free throw shooting and strong defense vaulted the SAR lead to 18-9 at halftime.
In the third quarter, SAR continued to play with the same tenacity on both sides of the ball, which extended their lead to 30-16 at the quarter's end. Ma'ayanot was unable to mount a comeback, and the Lady Sting held on for a 39-26 victory.
Sophomore Rebecca Kann led SAR with 11 points and was named Most Valuable Player at the game's end, while freshmen Rebecca Hyman, Sophie Hecht and Hannah Gabay scored nine, eight and seven points, respectively, in the win.
Congratulations to coaches Adam Brick and Abby Marcus, as well as all of the players, on winning SAR's only championship of the fall sports season. Hopefully, more championships will come our way in the spring!

JV Girls Soccer vs. SKA

March 4th, 2014- For the season's opening game, the girl's JV soccer team beat SKA, new to the league, 12-3. With 4 quick goals within the first 3 minutes of the game, an early finish after the third quarter was not too surprising. Everyone on the team played well, especially Eden Rebibo and goalie, Adina Noble. The top scorers for SAR were Lauren Kann (6) and Shoshana Goldman (3). This a great start for the team, hopefully one to be indicative of a strong season.

JV Girls Basketball vs Frisch

Hyman comes through in the clutch; SAR is headed to the Championship Game

March 4th, 2014- In an absolute thriller of a game, SAR edged out rival Frisch by a final of 41-39. The first half saw balanced play from both sides, as Frisch headed into the locker room with a slim lead, 18-17. The second half was near neck and neck, until Frisch appeared to have built up a descent seven point lead after forcing back to back turnovers, both leading to uncontested fast break layups. However, SAR came storming back with clutch baskets of their own, bring the score to 26-27 heading into the final frame, one which would prove to be epic. Back and forth both teams went, with momentum unable to stay on either side for more than a few brief moments. Frisch consistently received timely hoops from star players Reichel, who finished with 18, and Furer, who played a marvelous game at both ends of the court. The game went down to the wire. With Frisch bringing up the ball in the winding seconds, appearing to perhaps be holding for the final shot, suddenly(!!) Rebecca Hyman came up with a steal, took it the length of the court, pump faked, and finished the layup in style, putting her girls up by two with nine seconds to go. On the ensuing possession, Frisch could not get a shot off. The Sting are now headed to the league finals and will face either Ramaz or Maayanot. Rebecca Kann led the way for SAR with a cool 21 points, and numerous game changing plays on the defense end as well. The Hecht sisters both rebounded and protected the rim quite well, though it was Reichel who was able to hit from outside and keep the game close. Now with a big win past, SAR looks to bring home the hardware next Wednesday.
