Cappell's Last Second Trey Gives Ramaz the Win
January 16th, 2014- Whenever SAR takes on Ramaz in basketball, the game is sure to be hard-fought and physical. This game was no exception, as Ramaz eked out a 45-44 win against the Sting.
In the first quarter, points were hard to come by. The teams were tied at 5 with 5:30 remaining in the quarter, but each team managed only two points for the rest of the quarter. In the second quarter, the Rams, led by Aaron Cohen, went on a mini-run to go up 24-18 at the half.
SAR was not intimidated by their halftime deficit, and went on a 13-4 run in the third quarter to give them a 31-28 lead. The Sting continued their momentum into the fourth quarter, and led by a many as six points.
But as time was running out, Ramaz proved why they are one of the league's elite teams. The Rams never let SAR's lead get out of hand, and they headed into the final possession of the game down just 44-42. The Rams wanted the ball in sharpshooter Jamie Cappell's hands, and that's what happened. Cappell, who had been held in check for most of the game, delivered a huge three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left on the clock to give Ramaz the win and the Western Division title.
Point guard Sammy Hyman played a phenomenal game for the Sting, leading the team with 18 points. Sammy Marcus scored nine points and had an insane seven offensive rebounds, and Zach Wohlberg scored nine as well for the Sting.
Despite the loss, SAR put on an impressive showing, and still look like a team primed for a deep playoff run. Their next game is this Wednesday, January 22nd, at home against Heschel.
