Varsity Girls Basketball vs. Hillel

Shorthanded Lady Sting Hold On to Beat Hillel
January 5th, 2014- Down two starters and facing a solid Hillel team, SAR Varsity Girls Basketball knew that Sunday's game would present a challenge. The Lady Sting were up for it, and came away with a 28-24 victory.
SAR took an early 6-0 lead thanks to sophomore Leah Shulman's clutch free-throw shooting. However, Hillel was able to keep it close for the rest of the half, and went to the locker room trailing only by four.
During the third quarter, a combination of a cold streak of Hillel shots and strong inside play from junior Rebecca Packer helped give the Lady Sting a seemingly comfortable 25-18 with one quarter to play.
However, this game was far from over. In the early stages of the fourth quarter, Hillel's shots were falling, SAR's were not, and all of the sudden, SAR's lead shrank to 27-24 with the game winding down.
Hillel had opportunities to tie the game or cut the deficit to one, but were unable to capitalize. With just over a minute to play, sophomore Dahlia Fischer was fouled, and hit what proved to be the game-clinching free throw.
While not their best game overall, the Lady Sting were admirably able to overcome the absences of seniors Ali Trachtenberg and Sara Waxman, as well as junior Lilly Scherban, to improve to 6-2 on the season. While there are still some big games left to be played, the Lady Sting are currently in great position to clinch a home playoff game.
Their next game is this Thursday (1/9) at home against Ma'ayanot.
